Hello,

We are soon approaching March and the weather is still very "winter like" although Daylight Savings is around the corner and that means spring!!!

We continue to monitor on a daily basis the weather conditions and the Davisville/Spectrum school grounds to ensure the safety of our staff and students. We make daily announcements to staff and students to relay our plan for the day dependent on weather and conditions. We also follow TDSB practices and policies re: https://www.tdsb.on.ca/about-us/severe-weather).

To this effect we are implementing some changes effective Feb 28 (may change depending on future weather conditions):

The students of one of the Cohorts(Cohort 3-Armus/Dombrower, Harnick, Hannah, Andreasen, Kule) will be using the upper terrace during the a.m. and p.m. recess, effective Monday, Feb. 28. This has come as a result of having to shut down one of our outdoor Zones (terrain conditions unfavourable at this time).

The remaining 2 Cohorts will circulate between the 2 outdoor Zones (Turf and Pavement (where the basketball nets are)).

During our 1 hour lunch recess, we have been modifying depending on weather conditions and we will go with the 30 minute indoor and 30 minute outdoor using only 2 outdoor Zones, thus 2 Cohorts. While there are 2 Cohorts outdoors the 1 Cohort is indoors and then we switch after the 30 minutes.

We hope this helps explain better our process, practices, and our daily response which may change accorgindly.

Free Enhanced Language Training Program: Individuals new to Canada can continue their professional careers through TDSB Community Services’ Enhanced Language Training (ELT) program. Internationally Experienced/Educated Professionals (IEPs) can sign up for ELT to receive in-class instruction on their sectors and gain the opportunity to secure work placement in their related industry. International Languages: Elementary and African Heritage (ILE-AH): This free online program welcomes JK to Grade 8 students to learn a language (except for English and French) for 2.5 hours a week.  Learn more and register online today.

TPH Updated Covid-19 screening tool:

Toronto Public Health has updated their COVID-19 screening tool for children, students and adults for immediate use. Notably, this is now a single, universal screening tool for all ages – students and staff. There is also a significant change for people who have had a confirmed COVID-19 infection within the past 90 days and not needing to self-isolate if, for example, someone in the home has symptoms. And, the travel section refers directly to the federal travel pages as changes continue to be made.

Please do this health screening daily before coming to school and use either the paper Health Pass or the TDSB Health Screening App or https://tdsb.service-now.com/tswp to complete the verification of your screening, each day. 

One of the most important things we can do to slow the spread of COVID-19 is to screen ourselves daily for symptoms and also follow the circumstances public health identifies you should stay home. Thank you for your continued support in keeping our schools and workplaces safe and healthy.

Random Acts of Kindness Week Wrap-up:

Thank you to all that participated in Davisville's Random Acts of Kindness this past week. It was a big success: students and staff shared positive messages amongst each other and much teaching and learning took place that emphasized sharing kindness throughout our days. We thank the leadership team, students, parents, and staff whom supported this initiative and made it happen.

Week Ending Feb 11

Term One Report Cards and Parent/Caregiver-Educator Interviews-Thursday, Feb.17 (p.m.) and Friday, Feb, 18 (a.m.):

Your child (ren) will be coming home with a copy of their Report Card on Tuesday, Feb. 15. Virtual students will receive their Report Card via email. If your child's educator is requesting an interview they will inform. If you would like to meet with your child's educator to discuss the Term One Report Card, please feel free to send them an email.

Valentine's Day at DPS and Spectrum:

Monday is Valentine’s Day and we kindly ask that you respect our school policy of not bringing in treats for children, due to allergy and COVID reasons. 

Random Acts of Kindness Week-Feb 14-17:

This upcoming week is random acts of kindness week!  Next week in the foyer, there will be a kindness mural where teachers and students will be welcome to put kind messages on sticky notes and put them on the wall.  Finally, we have a RAK award to the student or students who take this random act of kindness week into their hearts and show kindness at school, home, and in the community.  Let’s spread kindness like confetti everywhere we go!

TDSB Grades 7 to 11: Apply to be a part of the Student Equity Collective:

The TDSB has launched the Student Equity Collective, an initiative centred and led by students to address injustices, racism and hate in our school communities. The Student Equity Collective is looking to hear from a variety of diverse voices and identities from across our system and previous leadership experience is not required!

The Collective is a new type of leadership opportunity for students in Grades 7 to 11 who want to make meaningful change at a local and system-wide level.  We cannot make meaningful, focused and sustained change without their voices at the table. All voices are important when dealing with issues around racism and hate and students are a critical part of the solution.

The application process is now open for the Student Equity Collective. The deadline to apply is Friday, Feb 11 at 4 p.m. For more information, visit the Student Equity Collective website.

What Students Need to know about the Student Equity Collective

• The Initiative is centred and led by students to address injustices, racism and hate in our school communities
• Looking for a diverse group of students
• All voices are important when dealing with issues around racism and hate and students are a critical part of the solution.
• Previous leadership experience is not required!
• The Student Equity Collective will come up with ideas, solutions and recommendations that address the issues that matter most to them. 
• Their ideas, solutions and recommendations will be brought directly to senior leadership at the TDSB to help make schools across the system more inclusive and welcoming for all students.
• Students in Grades 7 to 11 can apply

TDSB families are invited to join us for a series of engaging and informative conversations on topics we heard that you want to learn more about. Hear from leading experts and participate in question and answer sessions online.

These conversations are jointly hosted by the TDSB's Parent and Community Engagement Office and the Parent Involvement Advisory Committee and generously supported by the Ministry of Education's Parents Reaching Out Grants.

Dr. Bettina L. Love is an award-winning author and the Athletic Association Endowed Professor at the University of Georgia. Her writing, research, teaching, and educational advocacy work meet at the intersection of education reform, anti-racism, carceral studies, abolition, and Black joy. She is the author of We Want to Do More Than Survive: Abolitionist Teaching and the Pursuit of Educational Freedom.

This presentation is in collaboration with the African Heritage Month Committee and the Centre of Excellence for Black Student Achievement.   Join us.
