Bullying Prevention and Awareness Week

Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week

The TDSB recognizes Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week (BAPW) runs from November 20-26, 2022 with school boards across the province. This week is an opportunity to remember the impact that bullying can have on a school community and to talk about the ways we can report, support and prevent bullying in our schools.

As a system, we focus on prevention efforts and creating a welcoming school community – both in-person and online. Staff and students are engaged through events, activities and prevention programming and encouraged to take on leadership roles to enhance the school community. Supporting a positive school climate is one of the most important ways we support students’ well-being. The TDSB is committed to working to strengthen relationships between students and school adults and improving overall school climate to create inviting and engaging learning spaces where student want to be. We have a responsibility to respond to incidents of bullying, to support the affected individuals, hold students accountable and address issues that may have contributed to the situation and help prevent them from happening again.

Learn more about how we support students, bullying prevention programs that we offer and the educational partners we work with to support anti-bullying initiatives in our schools and classrooms. Follow along on social media with #TDSBbekind and join the conversation with stories of kindness.

WEEK OF NOV 14/22

Parent/Guardian/Caregiver - Teacher interviews

On Wednesday, November 16, students will receive their Progress Reports (for students in Grades 1 to 8) or the Initial Communication of Learning for students in Kindergarten. These reports let you know early in the school year about your child’s progress. For academic subjects like math, language, and science, the progress report tells you whether your child is progressing very well, well, or with difficulty. Progress reports do not have letter grades or percentage marks.

This is also the time for conferences with your child’s teacher. Here are some tips which may help with the interview process.

Great Questions to Ask

What strengths do you see in my child?  What are their areas of passion?

What are areas of growth for my child academically?  With their well-being?

Is my child working with different students/peer groups in varied subjects?

What can I do at home to help my child be more successful?

Interview Tips

Talk to your child about school before the interview. Ask how they think they are doing and how the teacher can help them meet their goals.

Get an idea of what the curriculum is like, the level your child is working at, and areas of growth and strengths.

Make a list of what you want to know before you go into the interview. You can prepare questions ahead of time if it will make you feel more at ease. Knowing what you want to know and writing it down ensures that you don’t forget anything, and that you get the information you need.

Be open and honest. Feel free to add your own observations around your child’s behaviour, strengths and weaknesses.

Ask what you can do at home to help your child.

Davisville/Spectrum Snack Program:

Davisville PS/Spectrum PS has a snack program in place which started in September, providing snacks to Davisville and Spectrum students daily. Davisville gets funding support from TFSS(Toronto Foundation for Student Success) for the program but Spectrum does not receive funding for snack. Davisville School has been kind enough to extend this snack program to our Spectrum students. The TFSS funding is not enough to support both the schools. Hence we request our wonderful parent community for donation towards the snack program for the year.

You can use this link to donate to the program : https://tfss.ca/donate/

Please Note : To make sure you are donating to Davisville Snack program,

Select Nutrition Program and then Name of the school as “Davisville Jr. PS” in the “support of someone” field. See screen shot below.

We appreciate your contribution and cooperation. Every child will get snack irrespective of whether you are donating or not.

MINISTRY OF EDUCATION DIRECTION:

The following is the excerpt taken from Shelley Laskin's Update-Nov. 6, 2022.

On November 3, 2022, Directors of Education received a Memo from the Ministry of Education outlining directions on Contingency Planning. The memo included the following:

  • If because of the planned withdrawal of services from CUPE staff a school board determines that it cannot maintain the healthy and safe operation of schools for students, school boards must [emphasis added] support students in a speedy transition to remote learning. Remote learning delivery should be synchronous and should align with the minutes of instruction outlined in Policy/Program Memorandum 164.
  • Unless other circumstances exist that require closure, schools must [emphasis added] also remain open to staff, who are expected to attend their workplace as usual, and in particular to support synchronous online learning.
  • Consideration should be given to planning for students with special education needs.
  • All efforts are made to preserve access to full day child care centres co-located with schools.
  • Before-and after-school programs will not be permitted to operate.

Based on this, senior staff have communicated to staff, parents and caregivers...While we remain hopeful that an agreement can be reached, should CUPE job action continue into next week, TDSB schools will remain closed to in-person student learning. (Note the TDSB is not involved in the provincial negotiations).

For ongoing updates and the latest information, please continue to check www.tdsb.on.ca/labour and follow @tdsb on Twitter. From the November 4th Update - there is no new information as of 8:00 pm this evening.

Student Learning - TDSB students will begin transitioning to synchronous (live, interactive) learning early next week, if the strike action continues. Additional information around student learning, including details around availability of technology, will be shared as soon as possible. In cases where students cannot participate in live, online learning, they will be supported to continue learning for the duration of the school closure. Parents/guardians/ caregivers, including those of students with complex medical and/or learning needs, will hear directly from their child’s teacher early next week with specific information and details related to their class. [Note - thank you to all teachers who are doing the best they can during these circumstances in support of student learning and to the Principals and Superintendents supporting them.]

Impact on Other Programs and Services:

Students Currently Enrolled in Virtual Learning - All elementary, secondary and adult students currently learning virtually will continue as normal.

Authorized Recreations Programs - When schools are closed to students, Authorized Recreation Programs will also be closed.

EarlyON Child and Family Centres - When schools are closed to students, both TDSB-operated and third-party operated EarlyON Child and Family Centres will also be closed.

This includes: Saturday International Languages Secondary Credit, Adult ESL, Community Programs/Learn4Life, and International Languages Elementary/African Heritage. Remote Secondary Credit Night School and Remote Saturday International Languages Secondary Credit will continue to run.

Finally a reminder from meEmployees who are members of CUPE provide critical daily services – they are office staff, caretaking staff, educational assistants, school based safety monitors, special needs assistance and more… their job functions include (but not limited to):

REMBRANCE DAY:

On Friday, October 28th, Ms. Armus' class was invited to participate in the Royal Canadian Legion Annual Remembrance Day Poppy kickoff event which was held at TTC's Leslie Station. Some photos are included in the following link: DPS/SA PHOTOS 2022-2023

On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month... we will remember them... Remembrance Day is observed since the end of the First World War to honour armed forces members who have died in the line of duty. From the last Friday in October to Remembrance Day, millions of Canadians wear a Poppy as a visual pledge to never forget those who served and sacrificed. On November 11th, we will remember them. See The Poppy
November 8th is Indigenous Veterans Day, a day to honour, commemorate and reflect on the over 12,000 First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people who served in WWI, WWII, and the Korean War and to honour those currently serving... we will remember them. The online site will be active during the same time as the in-person fair however you can get a sneak preview of some of the books included at the fair. TDSB Hindu Heritage Month:

The Toronto District School Board is proud to recognize Hindu Heritage Month during the month of November because of a motion passed in April 2018 by the Board of Trustees. The Hindu Heritage Month Act, 2016 states, Ontario is home to a large and vibrant Hindu community.

Hinduism is one of the oldest living religions which have flourished for over 10,000 years. It is an occasion to recognize and celebrate the rich tapestry of traditions, teachings and values that are integral to Hinduism and practiced by millions around the world today. November is an opportunity to celebrate the Hindu way of life, examine its impact and contributions to the world culture, and recognize values which promote compassion, tolerance, and inclusion.

The theme this year selected by the TDSB Hindu Heritage Month Volunteer Planning Committee is: Bhoomi Devi: Our Sacred Mother Earth. Hinduism has a message of spiritual connectedness and oneness of the whole creation. Everything in creation, living and non-living, is seen as a manifestation of one supreme universal consciousness or cosmic energy. Hindu way of living, of being and of knowing emphasizes coexistence with nature in peace and harmony. The earth is honoured as Bhumata (mother earth) or Bhudevi (Earth as divine mother) - the divine creative force of nature. Please follow us on Twitter: @tdsb_HHM.

We encourage everyone to learn and enjoy the outdoors

Indigenous Education Month Poster - November 2022

TDSB Indigenous Education Month:

November is Indigenous Education Month at the Toronto District School Board. This month is an important reminder to centre First Nations, Métis, and Inuit perspectives, voices, histories, and contemporary realities across the TDSB. It is an opportunity to learn from Indigenous perspectives on treaties, Indigenous leadership, achievements, resurgence, futurities, and creativity. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action is a strategic direction in the Board.

Throughout November, students, staff, and community members honour a number of important days to deepen knowledge, to learn from our shared history, and to build stronger relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Peoples.

  • Treaties Recognition Week is the first full week of November, November 7th-11th.
  • November 7 is International Inuit Day.
  • November 8 is National Indigenous Veterans Day.
  • November 16 is Louis Riel Day in Ontario.
