Alternative schools are safe, highly engaged, smaller school environments. They use non-traditional hands-on approaches to learning the required Ontario Ministry of Education Curriculum. Each school has a distinct identity and focus, such as democratic education, holistic learning, physical art, mindful living, entrepreneurship, social justice, community outreach and more. These schools are ideal for students seeking an alternative to mainstream education and who want to take an active role in their own learning. EdVance is a program specifically for 18-20-year-olds completing their high school diploma.
Parents and students interested in learning more about secondary alternative schools (grades 9-12, grades 10-12, grades 11-12) are encouraged to look at the following resources and contact the lead educators of the alternative school identified in the resources:
Alternative Schools – Find Your School (TDSB site)
Indigenous Education @ TDSB (TDSB site)
TDSB Secondary Alternative Schools Website (external site)
To support families in the process of selecting a secondary school, particularly learning about the programming available at the TDSB Alternative schools, we will be hosting the following events for students/families in the 2021-2022 school year:
Grade 8 Virtual Secondary Alternative Schools Information Fairs for Grade 8 students/families in November
