June 25 DPS&SA Weekly at a Glance

Hello,

Thank you to all our Davisville and Spectrum families and students for working with us through this most unusual year. Your support to staff and your children was never more important than this year. Students, staff, and families were asked to pivot and change learning modalities several times this year. It was hard on everyone. Our being at a different location also added some challenges for everyone. You’ve heard “it takes a village to raise a child” before, but this year we really saw it in action. You are truly an amazing group of parents in each school. We feel so fortunate to be a part of these amazing communities.

We are finally moving home!!! The new school building is complete, and the yard is being finalized as we speak. Nothing would make us happier than to be able to host all our families for a visit before September. Currently, it isn’t possible. We will be watching with great optimism and enthusiasm as things open again for large crowds. We will do everything we can to host an Open House/Tour for all our families. However, if this isn’t possible, Davisville’s first Council meeting is on September 16th and Curriculum Night is September 23rd. Spectrum’s first Council meeting is on October 7th and Curriculum Night is on September 22nd.

Please note that the student Provincial Report Cards were emailed electronically on Friday, June 25 to the email address we have on file. Students in Grade 4-8 also received their Report Card electronically to their student email address. The password format must be MM/DD/YYYY, including forward slashes. Example: 05/03/2004 for the birthdate May 3, 2004. Virtual School student Provincial Report Cards will be forthcoming.

We have 3 amazing teachers retiring this year. Mme Mantello and Nancy Rawlinson from Davisville and Vince DePasquale from Spectrum. Mme Mantello will be remembered for all the amazing events she organized for our community; Jump Rope for Heart, Carnival, Speech Contests, Author, and Illustrator visits along with the amazing Core French program she ran. Ms. Rawlinson will be remembered for her amazing projects she did with her students each year, including her 100 Books projects and celebrations, her stone soup and bread making and hands on approach to learning. She also ran many clubs including sock monkey puppets, origami club, speed stacking club, glovtapus, knitting and feel good chickens. She was also one of the classes ( a few years ago) who hosted the King of Tanzania, the Queen of Jordan, the Prime Minister and First Lady, along with Melinda Gates. Vince will be remembered for the amazing trips to Quebec, his technical skills as he introduced 3D printing, film making, coding and the yearbook production. We will miss them all.

We were so excited to see our Spectrum graduates as they came to pick up the items they left at school and their diplomas. It was so lovely to see the students and parents one last time. We wish you all the best. Grade 5 English stream and Grade 6 French Immersion stream families are invited to come on Tuesday, June 29 between 10:30-12:30 to pick up items left at school and leaving certificates. A separate email with the sign-up information has been shared with the respective families.

As Monday is our last day at 529 Vaughan Road, all other student items have been packed in individual bags and placed into a box for this year’s teacher. You can access these items in September from this year’s teachers. Devices can be returned to any school (except 529 Vaughan Road) until July 2nd.

We have been in communication with ClearImages for our 2020-2021 class composites and they will be distributed via School Messenger on Tuesday, June 29, 2021. Your child will also receive their 2020-2021 composite next September. If you are interested in individual student photos, please outreach to info@clearimages.ca and they will be able to assist you.

We will be sharing a Virtual Welcome to Kindergarten for our incoming JKs and French Immersion SKs. This will be shared with the respective families on Monday, June 28.

Junior Kindergarten Registration – new dates

Please note that French Immersion will have a double cohort next year, meaning we will intake students in both Junior and Senior Kindergarten into French Immersion in 2021/2022. The following year 2022/2023, entry into French Immersion will only be in Junior Kindergarten. The dates are also very early so watch for registration information in October as registration will take place in November. Families coming into the English stream will also now be able to register starting in November.

Have a wonderful summer. We hope you can enjoy time with family and friends. See you in September!

June 18/21 DPS/SA Weekly at a Glance

Hello,

DPS Leaving Class 2021 (Grade 5 English and Grade 6 FI): As outlined by the board, all TDSB schools will be celebrating farewells virtually this school year.

The staff have collaborated to create a wonderful pre-recorded celebration for our Grade 5 and Grade 6 FI students. An email will be sent out to all families of leaving students for the Virtual Leaving Class Presentation which will take place on Thursday, June 24th at 4:00 p.m. It will be posted and available for families to access throughout the week.

Grade 8 Graduation Reminder

As outlined by the board, all TDSB schools will be celebrating graduations virtually this school year. The staff have collaborated to create a wonderful pre-recorded celebration for our Grade 8 students. An email will be sent out to all Grade 8 families for the Virtual Graduation Presentation which will take place on Tuesday, June 22nd at 6:00 p.m. It will be posted and available for families to access throughout the week.

School Pick Up/Drop Off of Items

With the news that schools will remain closed for the rest of the 2020-2021 school year, we are now focusing on how students can retrieve their belongings from schools and return any outstanding items, such as text books, that belong to the school.

We have established a process, using Toronto Public Health guidelines, for students and parents/families to come into the school, should you wish to do so, to collect anything left behind and as well as to return any outstanding items.

Devices and all power cables, cases and chargers that were delivered with the device can begin being returned to any TDSB school now until Friday, July 2 (for elementary schools) and Friday, July 9 (for secondary schools) between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Learn more about returning technology here.

Our process will follow all physical distancing requirements, which means that it will take some time for everyone to have the opportunity to come in. I want to stress that we are being as responsible as possible in how we move through this process and that the number of people who can be in our school at a given time is well below that recommended by Toronto Public Health. Please note that masks or face coverings will be required to enter the building. A limited number will be available but you are encouraged to bring and wear your own. We appreciate your patience and support as we work through this together.

Thank you to all those who completed the GForm indicating a 10 minute window to come in (please only one person per family).

If you are feeling unwell, please do not come to the school. Before entering the building, you will be asked to conduct a self-assessment for any COVID-19 related symptoms, including fever, cough and runny nose and that you have not been in contact with anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

When you arrive at the school at your designated time, please:

  • conduct self-screening measures
  • enter through the front door
  • use hand sanitizer and wear a mask
  • respect all physical distancing requirements, staying at least 6 feet away from others
  • drop off any items at the entry (include your child’s name, teacher and list of items returned)
  • retrieve belongings from classroom
  • put any garbage in the bins provided
  • exit school property promptly

Non-essential items, such as notebooks and pencils, that are not picked up will be discarded. Clothing and personal items will be packed up and stored until the fall.

I know this is not the way we expected to end the school year but I appreciate your support in making this process as smooth and efficient as possible. I am already looking ahead to the fall when we can be together again in hopefully a more familiar way.

Moving

We are now in the process of planning for the 2021/22 school year. If you are moving, please remember to inform the office as soon as possible by sending an email to Davisville: biljana.svilaric@tdsb.on.ca and Spectrum: jyothisatyan.hiremaglur@tdsb.on.ca

TDSB Return of Borrowed Student Devices:  As per email sent to families from TDSBs Peter Singh on Friday, June 18, 2021.

In preparation for the start of the 2021-22 school year, families that borrowed devices (eg. iPad, Chromebook, Internet Hub) from the TDSB or local school are asked to return them.

Please return the device, case and all chargers/power cables that were delivered with the device to any TDSB school starting Monday, June 14 until Friday, July 2 (for elementary schools) and Friday, July 9 (for secondary schools) between the hours of 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Schools will receive devices even if remote learning continues.

All devices not returned by July 2 will be administratively locked, preventing student login. These devices will need to be returned when school resumes in September.

Students enrolled in a summer program run by TDSB may continue using the device for the duration of the summer program and should return the device in September.

If you have already returned the device to a TDSB School, please disregard this message.

If you have any questions, please contact DeviceReturns@tdsb.on.ca

NOTE: Rogers Connected for Success offers low cost, high-speed, unlimited Ignite plans starting at $9.99/month and many TDSB families may qualify for the program. Please click the following link for more information on pricing and eligibility requirements.

WHAT ARE TDSB SECONDARY ALTERNATIVE SCHOOLS?:

Alternative schools are safe, highly engaged, smaller school environments. They use non-traditional hands-on approaches to learning the required Ontario Ministry of Education Curriculum. Each school has a distinct identity and focus, such as democratic education, holistic learning, physical art, mindful living, entrepreneurship, social justice, community outreach and more. These schools are ideal for students seeking an alternative to mainstream education and who want to take an active role in their own learning. EdVance is a program specifically for 18-20-year-olds completing their high school diploma.

Parents and students interested in learning more about secondary alternative schools (grades 9-12, grades 10-12, grades 11-12) are encouraged to look at the following resources and contact the lead educators of the alternative school identified in the resources:

To support families in the process of selecting a secondary school, particularly learning about the programming available at the TDSB Alternative schools, we will be hosting the following events for students/families in the 2021-2022 school year:

  • Grade 8 Virtual Secondary Alternative Schools Information Fairs for Grade 8 students/families in November

  • Virtual Elementary Alternative Schools Information Fair in November

  • Virtual Secondary Alternative Schools Information Fair in January and June
